Mouthguard Length & Thickness

Mouthguard Length

Some people have a bad gag reflex and some gag when they wear a mouthguard, while others don't suffer from either of these issues. That's why we offer 2 different Mouthguard Length options.

When trying to decide which Mouthguard Length would work best for you, don't overthink it. Just ask yourself "Do you have a bad gag reflex? Do mouthguards make you gag?" and if you answer yes to either of those questions, then the 3/4 Length is for you!

There is no significant difference between the two options regarding comfort, fit, or protection.

"WHAT'S A GAG REFLEX?" - By definition, a gag reflex is an involuntary contraction of the back of the throat which is triggered by an object touching the roof of your mouth, the back of your tongue, the area around your tonsils, or the back of your throat. In simple terms, that feeling you get when you are about to vomit!

STANDARD Length

Covers 1st and 2nd molars. This option is what most athletes are comfortable with. NOTE: We do not cover the 3rd molar (wisdom tooth.) Most people don't have their wisdom teeth, but even if you do, we will not cover them.

3/4 Length

Covers 1st molar only. This option is recommended for people that suffer from a bad gag reflex, and for people who gag when wearing a mouthguard. NOTE: We also slightly trim the palate area of the mouthguard to help lower the chance of a gag reflex.

Mouthguard Thickness (Protection Level)

When selecting the right Protection Level option, what you're actually choosing is mouthguard thickness. The thicker the mouthguard is, the more padding it has, and the more padding it has, the more protection it offers. That's the theory anyways!

Having too many Mouthguard Thickness options can be confusing and frustrating! No matter how many different options a company offers, or the weird names they use, the main goal is to help the athlete choose the right mouthguard that they feel would work best for them.

In the 23 years that we've been making custom-fit mouthguards, we've learned that the differences between certain options are practically unnoticeable and offer no real benefit to the athlete. This is why we simplified this process and narrowed down our Protection Levels to these 2 options: Standard (universal thickness) and Heavy-Duty (extra thick).

If you're considering a Heavy-Duty mouthguard, don't worry about sacrificing comfort or breathing in order to get that added protection. Both of our mouthguard styles are extremely comfortable to wear and will allow you to breathe perfectly!

STANDARD

Sufficient protection for most athletes in most sports while offering a lightweight feel. They measure approximately 3mm thick and are loved by everybody that uses them. This is our version of a "Universal" mouthguard.
