We all know that MMA is an intense sport. MMA fighters must be in peak condition to stay on top of their game and beat out the competition. When you’re at the top of your game, you’re also fighting with the best of the best. That’s why it’s important to have the top equipment, the best training, and be prepared for pre and post-fights. 

 

Protective Gear

When you’re starting your training, you want to make sure you’re protected from head to toe, which means you need custom fit gear. Here is a list of the protective gear you will need:

MMA Hours

Training hours vary by athlete since all bodies are different. Some athletes choose to train three hours a day, whereas some athletes train up to six hours a day! Most MMA fighters take at least one day off to give the body a break. 

Most MMA fighters train twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. Mouthpiece Guy client, Amanda Nunes, who wears a custom fit MMA mouthguard, trains five times a week, sometimes exceeding six hours. She starts off with a morning run and then focuses on weight training in the evening. Additionally, she mixes a combination of Muay Thai, boxing, wrestling, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. 

Another Mouthpiece Guy client, Gina Carano, stated that she also starts off her day with a morning cardio, like a run, the treadmill, or jumprope. After her cardio, she then shadow boxes for about 15 minutes, then moves on to about two hours of sparring and technique. Carano does this twice a day, in the morning and evening. Exercise 

Most MMA fighters include a variety of different exercises in their training routine to stay in shape. This can include:

  • Cardio
  • Sparring in the MMA Ring
  • Weight and Strength Training
  • Wrestling
  • Agility Training

Cardio helps athletes keep their endurance up. Sparring in the ring can include practicing striking, blocking, wrestling, and other activities. Strength training helps MMA fighters build explosive strength and power. For agility, exercises like running, jumping, and hopping with sports-specific drills keep athletes stay quick on their feet.

 

Pre & Post Fight

Typically, fighters prepare six to eight weeks for a match. Although, most fighters continue training in-between matches. Once an MMA fighter has sufficiently trained, they are ready for a match. 

After a match, most fighters take a week or two off training to let their bodies recover. However, if there were any injuries or if surgery is needed, they may take longer to get back to training and back to the ring. 

Below is a list of the general rules on when fighters can return to the ring.

  • No injury sustained - 7 Days or 168 Hours
  • TKO - 30 Days
  • Choked Unconscious - 30 Days
  • Knock Out - 45 Days
  • Facial Cut - 60 Days
  • Limb or Joint Injury - 30 Days to 120 Days
  • Broken Bone - 180 Days
